Adult education, April 7 - May 26

Sundays at 9:30am in the Fireside Room

Beginning on April 7, our adult education class will study the book Christianity for the Rest of Us, by Diana Butler Bass. Bass has identified several core practices which help mainline churches to flourish in today's world. On Sunday mornings during April and May, we will specifically look at five of these practices:

  • Discernment - focuses on identity, purpose, and calling. Where am I going with my life? What is God's mission for this church?
  • Worship - focus on building community through worship, in which people are brought to Christ, formed into disciples, and sent into the world.
  • Healing - devotion to overcoming division, hatred, and discord; mending what is broken or displaced.
  • Reflection - thinking theologically about everything we do and seeking to continually deepen our faith through learning
  • Justice - focus on being the hands and feet of Christ in addressing social injustice and working for peace.
  • We will discuss these practices not only in light of Bass' examination of other mainline Protestant congregations around the country, but also in connection with the vision of SERVE that the Session has identified for our congregation and their selection of three main practices by which we live out that vision: worship, teaching, and healing. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:30am in the Fireside Room for what should be a lively and insightful discussion!

    Hunger study continues!

On the 4th Sunday of each month (April 28, May 26), we will take a break from our study of core Christian practices and return to our ongoing conversation about hunger which we began last fall.
